Off-grid photovoltaic and on-grid photovoltaic are the two main operating modes of solar photovoltaic power generation systems. They have significant differences in design, function, cost, application scenarios, etc.

Photovoltaic off-grid system
1. Definition: Photovoltaic off-grid system, also known as independent photovoltaic system, does not rely on external power grid power supply to form a self-sufficient power supply system.

2. Composition: The system is mainly composed of solar panels, batteries, charge and discharge controllers, inverters, etc. Solar panels convert solar energy into direct current, store it in batteries, and the inverter converts direct current into alternating current for load use. .

3. Application scenarios: Suitable for remote areas without power grid, isolated islands, communication base stations, street lights, outdoor breeding bases, etc.

4. Advantages:
Energy independence, not restricted by the power grid.
Can be used as an emergency power supply.
It is very practical for areas without power grid.

5. Disadvantages: The initial investment cost is high, mainly due to the need for batteries.
Maintenance costs increase, especially the replacement cost of batteries.
The system scale and design complexity are high, and the energy demand throughout the year needs to be considered.

Photovoltaic grid-connected system
1. Definition: Photovoltaic grid-connected system, or grid-connected photovoltaic system, refers to a solar power generation system connected to an external power grid to supply power together.

2. Composition: It is mainly composed of solar panels and grid-connected inverters. The inverter converts the direct current generated by the solar panels into alternating current with the same frequency and phase as the power grid.

3. Application scenarios: It is widely used in home roofs, commercial buildings, photovoltaic power stations, etc.

4. Advantages:
The initial investment cost is low because no battery is required.
Excess electricity can be sold to the power grid to generate economic benefits.
The system is simple and the maintenance cost is low.
The power grid serves as a backup power source, which improves the reliability of power supply.

5. Disadvantages:
Depending on the power grid, it may not be able to supply power when the power grid fails.
It needs to comply with the grid connection policy and standards of the power grid company.

Comparison between off-grid and grid-connected systems
1. Cost: The initial investment cost of an off-grid system is usually higher than that of a grid-connected system, mainly because batteries are required as energy storage devices.
2. Energy management: Off-grid systems require sophisticated energy management to ensure power supply during periods without sunlight.
3. Economic efficiency: Grid-connected systems can earn additional income by selling electricity to the grid, improving economic efficiency.
4. Autonomy: Off-grid systems provide higher energy autonomy and are not dependent on external grids.
5. Policies and subsidies: Grid-connected systems may be more likely to receive policy support and subsidies, especially in countries and regions that encourage the development of renewable energy.
6. Environmental impact: Both systems are conducive to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, but off-grid systems may have a lower impact on the environment due to their complete independence.
7. Installation and maintenance: Grid-connected systems are relatively simple to install and have lower maintenance costs, while off-grid systems are more complex to install and have higher maintenance costs.
8. Scalability: Grid-connected systems have better scalability and can increase the number of solar panels as needed.

Conclusion
Whether to choose a photovoltaic off-grid system or a grid-connected system depends on the user's specific needs, geographical location, grid access conditions and budget constraints. The off-grid system is suitable for remote areas without grid coverage and provides independent power supply; while the grid-connected system is suitable for areas covered by the grid and can obtain economic benefits by selling electricity to the grid.
